Meet Dr Mel, also known as “The Sporty Ed Psych”

An Educational Psychologist, “everyday amateur athlete,” and a fierce speaker and mentor.

Dr Mel’s journey into psychology has been shaped by her diverse experiences across the UK and the USA, working in a range of roles within psychology services that have broadened both her perspective and her practice. Having completed her Doctorate in Applied Educational Psychology at the University of Birmingham in December 2023, she has developed an approach that is highly efficient, down to earth, and grounded in real-world understanding.

Her doctoral thesis explored how girls in mid-adolescence perceive the impact of sport-based extracurricular activities on their wellbeing. This is a theme that continues to shape her work around confidence, identity, and performance.

What makes Dr Mel unique is the lens she brings, blending psychology with performance. She supports children, young people, and adults to better understand how they think, learn, and perform at their best, whether that’s in the classroom, on the field, or in everyday life. Her style is practical, relatable, and refreshingly human (sprinkled with just the right amount of humour).

Dr Mel is driven by fairness and equality, ensuring that children and young people have access to the support and opportunities they need, while helping adults better understand the challenges they face and how best to support them.

Educational psychologists do not formally diagnose conditions such as autism or ADHD. These assessments are usually carried out through NHS services or specialist private providers. However, I do support children and young people who already have diagnoses, are awaiting assessment, or may be experiencing difficulties associated with these needs. Most educational psychologists do not diagnose dyslexia, but they can identify needs around reading and writing and suggest support for children with literacy difficulties.
